The Lorax, Laughter & Learning: Earth Day Movie Screening

This Earth Day, Eco Sathi Nepal partnered with Bhoomithan Nepal and Sushrusha with the support of Blue Note Cafe to host a heartwarming movie screening of The Lorax at Blue Note Café, Sanepa. Children, accompanied by their parents, gathered in a cozy, welcoming space to celebrate the planet through the magic of storytelling. With free popcorn and warm coffee (served in bring-your-own cups), the event created a conscious, low-waste environment where families could reflect on the importance of caring for nature.

Lorax is a movie by Dr Seuss, and this movie was chosen because it provides an allegory to the urgent environmental message, which is in an animated form that resonates with children. The movie tackles themes of deforestation, greed, capitalism, and ecological loss while also teaching children that their initiative and leadership can make a change. The most iconic line of the movie, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” is an environmental plea. The movie’s protagonist, Lorax, says, "I speak for the trees" and "I am the Lorax who speaks for the trees, which you seem to be chopping as fast as you please!" These lines deeply reflect our and our children's values, where we teach them to be leaders for the environment, be the voice of the voiceless, and take the lead for environmental protection.

After the screening, a fun and engaging quiz for children helped deepen their understanding of the film’s core messages about environmental stewardship, the dangers of unchecked greed, and the need to protect our trees and ecosystems. The joy and curiosity in the room were clear as kids enthusiastically responded to questions and shared their thoughts.

Our event partner, Bhoomithan Nepal, is an enterprise that transforms discarded temple flowers into handcrafted rope incense (phoolbatti). Founded by Amod Karmacharya and Goonja Shrestha, Bhoomithan creates chemical-free, 100% biodegradable aromatic incense that honors both nature and Nepali cultural traditions. Their work not only reduces floral waste but also provides employment opportunities for women from marginalized communities. Their incense shows how tradition and innovation can come together for a greener Nepal.

Our other partner, Sushrusha, is a not-for-profit organization working actively in women’s health, SRHR, and climate change.

Thank you to Blue Note Café, for hosting us; located in  Sanepa, Blue Note Cafe is a vibrant space with music that tunes the soul and food that tickles your taste buds. A beautiful space to hang out and spend time with your loved ones.

We are grateful to everyone who joined in this joint celebration of Earth. May the spirit of the Lorax live on in every child who dares to speak for the trees and become a hero to protect the environment. Through movies, conversations, and activities like this, we aim to bring up a generation that shall care and be thankful for the planet we call home - our Earth. At the end of the Earth Day Event, everyone, including us, was filled with happiness, joy, and a smile in the hope of a brighter future for Earth and all the beings that it belongs to.
