This clean up wasn't just about picking up trash; it was a profound testament to the power of collective action, happening right on the heels of the recent Gen Z protests. It was a timely, constructive way to channel that passion, bringing youth and the wider community together for a tangible, positive change. It demonstrated that this generation isn't just about speaking up they're about showing up and doing the hard work to protect our cultural and natural heritage.
The success of the drive lay in the incredible unity on display. Volunteers from all the co organizing bodies worked side by side, their shared mission dissolving any organizational boundaries. Adding to this vibrant mix was the enthusiastic participation of students from the Deerwalk Institute, including the inspiring Bibisha Adhikari and her friends. Their presence underscores a crucial point: education and action are two sides of the same coin when it comes to environmental stewardship.
Adding a touching local touch to the clean up was the sight of reused bottles along the footpath, thoughtfully repurposed to hold water for the numerous animals, including dogs and monkeys, that inhabit the Gausala area. It was truly great to see this simple, clever example of community led reuse and compassion right where we were working to reduce waste.
The collected waste offered a stark look at the consumption habits impacting our sacred spaces. A massive total of 105.41 kg of waste was removed from the Gausala area. This included a sobering 65 kg of Mixed Waste, over 34 kg of Plastics (specifically 34.69 kg of general plastics and 1.3 kg of PET Bottles), and a little over 4 kg of other materials (2.7 kg of Glass Bottles and 1.72 kg of Metals). The sheer volume of Mixed Waste highlights the urgent need for better waste segregation at the source, but the recovery of plastics and bottles means less non biodegradable material is poisoning our sacred soil and the Bagmati River a genuine victory for the community!
To Bibisha, her friends, and every single volunteer from Eco Sathi Nepal, Bhoomithan, and Clean Up Nepal: Thank you. Your dedication at this third location sets an incredible example. You are the heartbeat of a cleaner, greener Nepal, and the true guardians of our heritage sites. This initiative is proof that when young people are given a platform, they don't just participate they lead. Are you ready to trade an hour of sleep for a lifetime of impact? Keep an eye out for the next location. This youth led movement is gaining momentum, and together, we can redefine the future of our communities!
